Quick answer
A MEDDPICC note is an eight-line qualification summary of a sales conversation: Metrics, Economic buyer, Decision criteria, Decision process, Paper process, Identify pain, Champion, and Competition. This tool reads a transcript or email thread and writes that note for you, marking anything the conversation did not cover as Not stated so you can see the gaps before you run a deal through procurement.
- MEDDPICC scores a deal on eight things: the six MEDDIC fields plus Paper process and Competition.
- A verbal yes is not a closed deal until the paper process, legal, security, procurement, is mapped.
- Naming the real competition, including "no decision," is as important as naming a rival vendor.
- Paper process and Competition tend to shift late in a deal, so revisit them after every call in the back half.
- MEDDPICC suits deals with real procurement or competitive stakes; MEDDIC suits a lighter multi-stakeholder deal.

What a MEDDPICC note actually captures
MEDDPICC carries the same six fields as MEDDIC, the quantified Metrics, the Economic buyer, the stated Decision criteria and Decision process, the concrete Identify pain, and the internal Champion, plus two more built for deals with real procurement stakes.
Paper process is the procurement, legal, and security path the contract has to travel before it is signed, the steps that happen after everyone has already said yes in the room. Competition is the alternatives actually in play: a rival vendor, an in-house build, or simply doing nothing, since "no decision" beats every competitor combined in most lost deals.
The note quotes the transcript wherever it can, so each line reads as evidence rather than a guess. A field the conversation never covered gets marked Not stated instead of filled in with an assumption, since a blank Paper process or Competition field is exactly the risk that stalls a deal late.
What is MEDDPICC?
MEDDPICC is a sales qualification framework for deals with real procurement or competitive stakes. It extends MEDDIC's six fields, Metrics, Economic buyer, Decision criteria, Decision process, Identify pain, Champion, with two more: Paper process (the procurement, legal, and security path to a signed contract) and Competition (the real alternatives in play, including doing nothing).
How is MEDDPICC different from MEDDIC?
MEDDPICC keeps all six MEDDIC fields, Metrics, Economic buyer, Decision criteria, Decision process, Identify pain, and Champion, and adds two more: Paper process and Competition. Paper process names the procurement, legal, and security steps between a verbal yes and a signed contract, the part of the deal that stalls after everyone in the room already agrees.
Competition names every real alternative, including a rival vendor, an in-house build, or the prospect doing nothing at all. Reach for MEDDPICC over MEDDIC when a deal involves a formal procurement process or when you know competitors are actively in the evaluation, since those are exactly the two risks MEDDIC does not ask about directly.
How do I run a deal with MEDDPICC?
Start with the same six MEDDIC questions: what number is the buyer trying to move, who signs the budget, what criteria and process govern the decision, what pain is driving it, and who is your internal champion. Then add the two MEDDPICC-specific questions.
For Paper process, ask what happens after a verbal yes: does legal need to review the contract, does security need to run an assessment, does procurement require competing bids. For Competition, ask directly who else they are evaluating, including staying with their current tool or building something in-house. A deal with a mapped paper process and a named competitive set is far less likely to stall in the final stretch than one where both are still guesses.
Worked example
Metrics: Wants to cut lead response time from 4 hours to under 15 minutes. Economic buyer: VP of Revenue, confirmed she signs off on tools under $50k. Decision criteria: Must integrate with existing CRM and support SSO. Decision process: Security review, then a 2-week pilot, then contract. Paper process: Legal review plus a security questionnaire before signature, roughly 3 weeks. Identify pain: Reps miss inbound leads overnight, losing an estimated 20% of qualified volume. Champion: Sales Ops Manager, has pushed two prior tools through the same approval process. Competition: Also evaluating one rival vendor and the option of staying with their current manual process. Status: Strong fit, paper process mapped, advance to security review.
The average B2B win rate fell to 19% in 2025, from 29% a year earlier, and deals with early economic-buyer involvement win 55% more often. Ebsta 2025 GTM Benchmarks
How to run MEDDPICC well
Ask about Paper process early, not after you think the deal is closed. A verbal yes that still has to clear legal, security, and procurement is not a closed deal, and each of those steps can add weeks you did not plan for.
Name the competition directly instead of assuming you are the only option in the room. "No decision" quietly beats more deals than any named competitor, so ask what happens if they simply do nothing, not only which other vendor they are considering.
Keep Metrics, Economic buyer, and Champion current the same way MEDDIC requires, since MEDDPICC inherits every MEDDIC risk on top of its own two extra fields.
Revisit Paper process and Competition after each call in the back half of the deal specifically, since these two fields tend to change late: a new competitor enters, or procurement adds a requirement nobody mentioned in the first call.

How is MEDDPICC different from MEDDIC?
MEDDPICC adds Paper process and Competition on top of MEDDIC's six fields, for deals with a formal procurement process or active competitors.
When should I use MEDDPICC instead of MEDDIC?
Use MEDDPICC once you know a formal procurement process is involved or a named competitor is in the evaluation.
What does competition cover in MEDDPICC?
Competition covers every real alternative the prospect is weighing, not just a named rival vendor. That includes staying with their current process, building something in-house, or simply doing nothing at all, since no decision quietly beats more deals than any single competitor.
