🎨 Design Basics for Founders: Making Better Design Decisions Early

About the Session

Design is often treated as a finishing touch. In reality, it shapes how users understand your product, trust your brand, and decide whether to stay or leave.

In this Founder Labs session, we’ll break down the fundamentals of good design for founders. No prior design experience required. This is about learning how to think visually, make clearer decisions, and communicate better with design, even if you are not a designer.

We’ll focus on practical design principles and how to apply them using tools like Figma. The goal is to help founders move faster, give better feedback, and avoid common design mistakes that slow teams down or weaken products early.

This session is designed for non-designers who want practical skills they can apply immediately. Whether you are building your first MVP, working with a designer, or doing things yourself, this lab will give you a stronger foundation.

What We’ll Talk About

🎯 Design fundamentals. Layout, spacing, hierarchy, and alignment

About the Guest

Joey Lee is Chief Product Designer at Klipy and co-leader of Friends of Figma Hong Kong. She studied biomedical sciences in university but found her true interest in solving problems for people, not just humans in the abstract.

She transitioned into product design by teaching herself through experimentation, building, breaking, and learning rather than following theory. After several years in consultancy helping startups ship their first products, she has worked with teams across tech, food, retail, and consumer brands, including Pernod Ricard, Bakehouse, MTR, Tencent, and KIN Foodhall.

Joey believes design is fundamentally an act of communication. As Donald A. Norman writes in The Design of Everyday Things, design requires a deep understanding of the person the designer is communicating with. Good design is effective communication, and it is a skill founders can learn, not a talent reserved for designers. She will share a hands-on, practical approach to design that founders can apply to their products, teams, and everyday decisions.
